Yahoo to announce layoffs

Yahoo to announce layoffs
Sources have revealed to the Wall Street Journal that Yahoo! will announce layoffs when they reveal their quarterly earnings tomorrow.  The exact number of jobs affected isn’t know but is estimated to be at least 1,000.  The move isn’t much of a surprise, however.  Last month they hired a consulting firm to help them streamline their operations. The company, which once boasted the top search engine on the net, has been struggling as of late.  Its shares have fallen 32% over the past month, its deal with Google was put on hold due to an FTC investigation, and earlier this year they rejected a takeover bid by Microsoft.  Shares entered the week at $12.90 after hitting a 5-year low of $11.37 last week.  Microsoft takeover bid was for $33 a share. Intel SSDs RAIDed up for blinding speed

Intel SSDs RAIDed up for blinding speed
by Nilay Patel, posted Oct 20th 2008 at 7:57AM Intel’s hot X25-M SSD is one of the faster drives out there, and while it’s not surprising that a RAID 0 array of two of the $600 units is quick, it turns out it’s actually one of the fastest RAID 0 arrays ever. At least that’s the word from the crew at HotHardware, who say that two X25-Ms kicked out the fastest IOMeter numbers they’ve ever seen, and produced 396MB/s reads and 130MB/s writes. Yeah, damn. Fujitsu’s LifeBook P8020 12.1-inch ultraportable wars against the dreaded screen bezel
by Paul Miller, posted Oct 20th 2008 at 8:46AM From what we can tell, Fujitsu’s spent the industrial design budget for the LifeBook P8020 on one thing and one thing only: trimming those sides. We really do love to see a laptop with a keyboard and screen flush with the edges, seemingly wasting zero space. The resulting product is a tad chubby (1.1- to 1.5-inches) and lacks a certain charm, but there’s all sorts of goodies under the hood, and the 2.9 pound weight is certainly passable. The 12.1-inch ultraportable packs a Centrino 2 processor, 320GB HDD (or a 64GB or 128GB SSD), 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, gigabit Ethernet, a fingerprint reader, DVD burner, gesture-friendly trackpad and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. The Cue reminds you to do your breast self-exam
All women know from a fairly young age that doing a breast exam on yourself once a month is essential.  However, as women our lives get crazy and we don’t always remember to do it.  Then time comes around for a female check-up and you end up getting lectured by the doctor.  Well with the Cue, you’ll have a helpful reminder once a month to do your exam.  It hangs on your shower wall, so hopefully you aren’t bashful about it hanging there.  It is meant to hang there so that you can do the exam from the privacy of your shower. Intel unveils world’s first working Moorestown MID

Intel unveils world’s first working Moorestown MID
by Thomas Ricker, posted Oct 20th 2008 at 1:24AM This sexy MID has been dropping jaws for more than a year now. Unfortunately, the plastic mock-up has always been a non-working, gutless model with little more than a glossy screen and backlight to demonstrate the form factor Intel’s gunning for with its future Moorestown Mobile Internet Devices. That all changed today when a world’s first working, Moorestown prototype (which we think is the device above) hit the stage at Intel’s Taipei, Developer Forum in the familiar hands of Anand Chandrasekher. Moorestown consists of a Lincroft micro-architecture that integrates the 45nm processor, graphics, memory controller, and video encode/decode functions onto a single, tiny chip with 10x less idle power draw than those first-gen, Atom-based MIDs and UMPCs. Some Inspiron Mini 9s shipping with partition issues
by Nilay Patel, posted Oct 19th 2008 at 6:41PMEarly Dell Inspiron Mini 9 customers who sprung for a larger drive may want to check their partitions — Dell apparently used a static 4GB Ubuntu image during some initial manufacturing runs, leaving the OS in a 4GB partition and the remainder unused. LG demos 15-inch double-sided LCD
by Tim Stevens, posted Oct 19th 2008 at 9:38PM While most manufacturers seem to be working on privacy tech to make LCDs harder to view by anyone not sitting right in front of them, LG is bucking the trend, demoing a prototype that can be read even by those sitting clear over on the back side.
