Microsoft may extend Windows XP “downgrade” deadline by six months
by Darren Murph, posted Oct 4th 2008 at 6:15PMFirst off, we’ll warn you that these reports are currently unconfirmed by the suits in Redmond, but word has it that Microsoft is working with at least one OEM to have the Windows XP “downgrade” deadline pushed out from January 2009 to at least July 31, 2009. That’s according to an e-mail sent from Microsoft to an unspecified partner company, which purportedly details a plan to work with other buddies in pushing that deadline out another half year. Given the results thus far, we suppose we’re not too surprised to hear that firms are still clamoring for the XP option, but one wonders when this madness will ever end. BenQ’s potent MID S6 headed for worldwide release?
by Darren Murph, posted Oct 4th 2008 at 4:16PM It’s shocking to even hear ourselves admit that we’re licking our chops for a particular MID, but it’s true. BenQ seems to have nailed most everything on the long-awaited MID S6 by including an 800MHz Intel Atom CPU, 4.8-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, 512MB DDR2 RAM, a 2GB SSD, Bluetooth 2.0 / WiFi, microSD slot, inbuilt G-sensor and support for a myriad of multimedia file formats. On top of all of that, the Italian superstar could be coming to other corners of the globe as evidenced by an elaborate press page on its Global website that details its features in plain English. Said said provides an exhaustive list of capabilities and specifications, not to mention a bevy of press shots. (Read the full post about ‘BenQ’s potent MID S6 headed for worldwide release?’…)

Emulator gives you the T-Mobile G1 experience now
by Chris Ziegler, posted Oct 4th 2008 at 3:10PM Yeah, the wait for October 22 (or after) is absolutely excruciating; trust us, we know. We’ll take every scrap of information and imagery we can to hold us over until G1s start showing up on doorsteps in a few weeks, but T-Mobile’s really gone above and beyond the call of duty here by setting up a surprisingly functional and feature-complete emulator to satisfy our urges to touch icons and click buttons. WD gloats about second-generation Caviar Green Drive
by Darren Murph, posted Oct 4th 2008 at 12:02PM Western Digital didn’t have too many comrades on the green bandwagon back in July of last year, but now it’s just one amongst legions. Nevertheless, it’s keeping its eco-friendly membership badge up to date with the second-generation Caviar Green Drive. Said HDD features the firm’s own GreenPower technology to “significantly reduce power consumption” compared to those traditional energy-sucking alternatives. The freshened platform is based on WD’s 333 GB/platter technology with 32MB cache, with sizes ranging from 500GB to 1TB. Sony’s 18.4-inch VAIO VGN-AW190 gets reviewed

Sony’s 18.4-inch VAIO VGN-AW190 gets reviewed
by Darren Murph, posted Oct 4th 2008 at 1:56PM Time to face the music, folks — 18.4-inches is the new 17-inch. Sony’s recently unveiled VAIO AW is undoubtedly going toe-to-toe with HP’s new HDX 18t, and while both will garner all sorts of stares from onlookers, it appears that the VGN-AW190 may have an edge in terms of extras. For starters, this unit’s Adobe RGB-compatible display will be mighty impressive to those who dabble in photos to make ends meet, and the included RAM, CPU and Blu-ray drive were all smiled upon. Strangely enough, Sony tossed in a pathetically slow 4,200RPM hard drive to put a damper on overall performance, but that — along with the $3k+ sticker — was the only real weak spot. Gadgetell Behind the Scenes: Technology used in MLB’s Instant Replay
As technology gets more and more advanced everyday, it is no surprise that we often find new technology being used in places we often wouldn’t have imagined a few years ago.  Baseball is a professional sport in which there was limited technology used in the past.  However, just as everything changes over time, so has baseball.  Many professional sports leagues, such as the NBA, NFL, and NHL, have already adopted the use of Instant Replay.  Yet, baseball failed to incorporate this technology into everyday use, until recently.  As of now, it is only used to find out whether a home run is, in fact, a home run, or if it should be a double or a foul ball.  A home run call that was ruled incorrectly by an umpire can ultimately change an inning, game, series, or a season.  Such an effect has led Commissioner Bud Selig to introduce Instant Replay to MLB. Gemei’s A320 PMP borrows Sony’s button symbols, forgets to say “thanks”
by Darren Murph, posted Oct 4th 2008 at 7:44AM Look, we’ll be honest — Gemei’s PMPs are among the few developed entirely in China that are actually worth a glance, and yes, we’re digging the overall sleekness of the A320. But seriously, could we decide on something other than Sony’s iconic button logos and a very blatant OS X-sourced wallpaper? Petty gripes aside, the handheld should handle a plethora of audio / video formats along with GBA games via an integrated emulator. Amazon’s Kindle 2 in the wild?

Amazon’s Kindle 2 in the wild?
by Chris Ziegler, posted Oct 3rd 2008 at 9:06PM So much for Amazon’s attempts to quell Kindle 2 rumors, eh? Talk of a replacement (or a pair of replacements) for Amazon’s popular — but very oddly-styled — e-reader has been in the mix seemingly since the first model started shipping, and Boy Genius Report has scored shots of something that certainly looks like it could be in the legitimate pipeline. The revised device appears to address complaints over the original’s look head-on, rounding the corners and ditching the oddball angles; the scroll wheel has been replaced with a joystick, the SD slot is gone (don’t worry, there’s at least a gig and a half on-board), and around back, we have grills that seem to suggest integrated stereo speakers.
