NEC tiling e-ink displays for massive coverage
by Tim Stevens, posted Oct 28th 2008 at 8:29AM What’s better than a single low-power e-ink display? How about eight of them stuck together to form one massive sheet? NEC is indicating it can now tile up to eight displays together to achieve maximum reflective real estate, composed of digital sheets matching standard A4 (8.3- x 11.7-inches) and A3 (11.5- × 16.5-inches) sizes, the latter having only a 1mm border. Eight of those stitched in two rows of four could make a display nearly two feet tall and over five feet wide. No resolution specs are given, and the 10:1 contrast ratio is standard stuff, but these displays do offer 16-shades of grayscale — four times that offered by Oprah’s new favorite thing. Sony’s Rolly learns the Bluetooth trick
by Thomas Ricker, posted Oct 28th 2008 at 4:27AM Oh Rolly… we know you’re an overpriced, 2GB dancing robot with convoluted controls and questionable sound quality. You enjoyed the Trail, now, want a date?

You enjoyed the Trail, now, want a date?
I’ve seen and heard all kinds of things happen on the internet.  This one by Facebook and SpeedDate.com definitely ranks up there as one of the oddest internet business deals I’ve heard of.  If you are a Facebook user that plays the game Oregon Trail, you had better be prepared because your application is no longer going to be the one you know and love.  It’s going to be one that is trying to sell you on love.  Or find you love . . . or something. Sanyo ALBO is retro-futuristic digital picture frame

Sanyo ALBO is retro-futuristic digital picture frame
I can’t help but think that Sanyo’s newest digital phone frame, the ALBO, sounds like a major brand of dog food. As far as I know, ALBO isn’t a fancy acronym for something, but it is one of the coolest digital picture frames that I have ever seen. Considering that there is currently a huge market for digital picture frames now, that is saying something. The seven-inch LCD frame has one of the most interesting designs, straight out of a science-fiction TV show’s prediction of what television would look like in the future. Just look at the design, and that last sentence will make sense. (Read the full post about ‘Sanyo ALBO is retro-futuristic digital picture frame’…)

New Xbox Experience videos let you vicariously play dress up
by Samuel Axon, posted Oct 27th 2008 at 10:29PM You already know the Xbox 360 is getting new community features, a revamped dashboard, Avatars, and of course Netflix video — all things we’ve been excited about since we saw them in action at E3 this year. There hasn’t been much to go on since then, but we recently came across some short videos exhibiting Parties (which let users socialize and make plans while engaging in separate games and activities) and Avatar customization options; hopefully they’ll hold you over until the features go live November 19th. We won’t be held responsible for the brain deterioration caused by the vacuous marketing-speak accompanying the moving images, however. AUO debuts 15-inch multi-touch panel, screens aplenty
by Donald Melanson, posted Oct 27th 2008 at 2:57PM AUO is never one to rest on its laurels when it comes to displays of all shapes and sizes and, if its latest batch is any indication, it looks like it’s not showing any signs of letting up. One of the stand-outs here is a 15-inch multi-touch panel which, like the company’s 8-inch model, has all the necessary multi-touch technology built onto the panel itself, and is able to recognize light pens in addition to fingers (it’s also rolled out new 4.3-inch and 12.1-inch models for good measure). Gears of War 2 Merchandise

Gears of War 2 Merchandise
It appears the Gears of War franchise is bigger than I thought as I found not one, but two products that are Gears of War related today. First is the Gears of War themed Zune, which not only sports specially designed graphics on the frame, but it comes pre-loaded with 240 pieces of Gears of War and its sequel’s media including “the original game soundtrack, behind-the-scenes videos, game trailers, concept art galleries, and more”. All of this content is exclusive to this Microsoft mp3 player. Of course, if you really want to live Gears of War, you can always purchase the Lancer rifle, a virtual prop from the game now turned real. As you can see by the fake blood on the saw edge of this, this is no children’s toy. (Read the full post about ‘Gears of War 2 Merchandise’…)
